Our first weekend of full rugby competition. The weather at The Fortress was a little indifferent, but probably just softened the ground somewhat. A bit less of a crowd than what most expected at Lyndhurst, but our staunch supporters were on site.
Our Colts played at Redwood Park in a grading game – guess it is the last time they will play Avalon. Tony (Club Captain) went to the game and reported a great start to the season by our young men. Bit one-sided, but apparently our Boys totally played as a team. Well done guys.
Our Reserve Team is back this year and had a tight loss. Good to have them back playing.
The Premier 2 (last season Premier Reserve) turned up and played as a Team right from the start of the game. Even when changes were made, nothing changed in the game plan. Everyone watching saw a Team play with commitment and for each other. So easily the score could have been almost twice the score Tawa posted. Some mistakes were made at crucial times, but not enough to change the game. I put it down to
“Rust”. These will be overcome by their next game, as they were not major. Probably more to do with first up game anxiousness. Overall, a very skilled side.
The Premiers – um, well, so … , I think … , or not! Unsure, hard to say! What happened, what did not happen?? Oh, I remember – an uninspiring Petone Team won.
A couple of awesome Super Rugby games over the weekend. Two games that deserved to be drawn, but under Golden Point rules, this was not possible. Who would have thought we would see two games requiring the extra time. At this level, Rugby is in great health in NZ. Caught Razor on TV suggesting the competition is getting tougher. I think he is correct. Two or three weeks ago one would be forgiven for thinking
the Competition was in the bag. After this weekend it is clearly still wide open.
