RIP
Ron
Smith
Last night we found out some very sad news, our club has lost a very loyal and dedicated member.
Not everyone would have known Ron Smith, as he did a lot of things behind the scenes, he could often be found on the side-lines watching the refs during the premier games. And I am sure he would have been critiquing their
performance.
Ron Smith was a life member of the Wellington Referees Association. It was through his refereeing experience that he was introduced to the Tawa Rugby Club. Many years ago Chris Boyd asked him to go to Tawa College to talk to the First XV about the rules of the game.
Later, he then came down to the rugby club with the First XV on a Sundays and help the
boys with the cleaning. It was then that I met Ron, when Thomas and I would go back to the Club after a big night to pick up our car. We would often hang around and have a chat to Ron as he would be going around telling Ron Davies how things should be done.
Ron would often be down at the club doing the odd jobs around that needed to be done but wouldn’t tell anyone that he did them. Ron Davies remembers a time when he noticed that some
shelves had mysteriously been put up. When Ron Davies asked about the sawdust on the ground and if he had put the shelves up he denied it and said it was Allan Davidson…but we know you put them up.
He will be greatly missed. Thank you for all your hard work and support over the years!
