Hot off the press: at this week's management meeting, it was confirmed that the club will be holding our 80th anniversary combined with our annual Club Day on 28 - 30 May 2027.

At this stage we are looking to hold a golf event on Friday 28th May, commencing around midday, followed by our traditional Club Day on Saturday 29th May, and a lunch or dinner on Sunday 30th May. Further details to be advised once they have been confirmed, but pencil those dates in your calendar now!

What an outstanding performance by the Canes on Friday night in dealing to the Brumbies - and with the Blues coming up next week, you would be excused for clearing the calendar for the following weekend's final celebrations.

This year certainly resembles 2015 when we were by far the most consistent team, but everyone forgot to tell the Highlanders!

One week at a time.

Saturday was indeed bittersweet for me. Each year when we play the Ories, I contact an old friend GD Ross and we watch the match together. GD is a long-time Ories player/critic/supporter. So there we were on Saturday, watching the Premier game at the tennis court end with another long time Ories player/critic/supporter Duke Ellerington.

It was a game of two halves, with the Ories dominating possession and territory in the first half going out to a deserved 21 - 7 lead, but Tawa fighting back late in the half to close the gap to 21 - 19.

The second half was a reversal of the first with Tawa dominating possession and territory, but the Ories defended stoutly and it was only a penalty with 10 minutes to go by Kalim Kelemete that put Tawa in front.

At that point I excused myself to take my usual place at the northern end with the ‘brains trust’ of Tawa rugby aka Coathanger, Floyd, Nigel Carmichael, Kevin Pulley, Graeme Ross, etc., however I got intercepted by my sister who had made her way out from Island Bay with her whānau to watch her grandson Nico play for the Ories. So there I was, on the 22m at the northern end, when the Ories got a penalty with time almost up close to the halfway line. To my dismay and my sister’s excitement, it went straight down the middle and with it a loss 24 - 22.

That and other results puts Petone in the box seat to take out the Swindale Shield with three rounds to play with 44 points. We are in second on 38 points along with HOBM and Upper Hutt. OBU and Pare-Plim are one point further back. Ories and Wainui make up the top 8.

We have Norths next week away at Jerry Collins Park. It's shaping up to be a key match to not only get us back on a winning track, but a top two finish in the Swindale Shield does give us home advantage when it comes to the play-offs.

Western Bay bragging rights are also on the line. 😎

Other results:

The Premier 2s have maintained their recent momentum with an excellent 62 - 34 win and are now sitting in sixth position on the table.

The Ducks after winning the first round played Paremata-Plimmerton in the first game for the Paul Potiki Memorial Shield. They got off to a resounding win 31 - 12 with Dan Fouey reportedly the stand-out for the team.

No other teams played.
