Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa - Happy Samoan Language Week!

Well that was an interesting weekend of code.

The Canes started it with a predictable losing performance against the sheep shaggers, the Chiefs smashed a disappointing Blues outfit, Moana Pasifika scored a great last minute win against the Brumbies, and the Wahs just couldn’t finish off the Panthers.

In-between, our Premiers and Premier 2s travelled across to Wainuiomata in what was their 80th anniversary. There was a great turnout on an awesome late autumn day.

The Premier 2s took awhile to overcome Wainui, but two late tries saw them come out winners 28 - 7, and they now have a five win four loss record and are moving progressively up the table. They are currently in seventh position just behind Avalon, with most of the teams below them to play.

The Premier match was a hard watch. The team had quite a number of regulars unavailable but that was no excuse. Wainui played into the breeze and took the match to Tawa who made numerous unforced errors. Tawa turned at half-time behind on the scoreboard but to their credit they rolled up their sleeves and took the lead going into the last quarter. Unfortunately a failure to clear the ball from the kick-off resulted in Tawa giving away possession and the lead shortly after.

The 33 - 26 loss and two bonus points saw Tawa slip from first to third on the points table, with four rounds to play.

This week, the Premiers are hosting the Ories at the home of rugby Lyndhurst Park. This should be a good encounter with Tawa looking to get its campaign back on a winning track, and the Ories who are sitting in seventh looking to cement themselves in the top eight with the Jubilee Cup just around the corner.

I also have a soft spot for the Ories, as it’s the club I played my first year of Premier rugby at way back in 1982. Some great memories.
