Onto the Premier match. It was great to see Hugo Plummer and Matolu Petaia released by the Hurricanes - and a bonus that another Hurricane Vernon Bason chose to get some much-needed game minutes for Tawa, as his club side in Palmerston North had a BYE.
The game lived up to its billing. Tawa played with a slight breeze in the first half and led 14 - 7 at the break. Tawa were dominant in the forward exchanges, but OBU threatened every time they had the ball in hand.
It was 21 - all with 20 mins to go after OBU flanker ran 80 meters to score under the sticks. Tawa supporters were nervous as it
looked as though OBU may run Tawa off its feet. However it was the Tawa pack that stepped up, led by Matolu Petaia, Hemi Fermanis, Tito Ioane, and George Risale. Weston Sao and Vernon Bason (after his 10 min sin bin) stepped up big time, alongside the pin point goal kicking of Solomona Uelese, who nailed four conversions and two penalties which ultimately made the difference.
With time
up, OBU were hammering our line for what seemed an age when OBU knocked on, and the game was over with Tawa leading 31 - 26. There was much relief amongst the players and supporters.
The result has left the Swindale Shield competition wide open with only three points separating the top four teams and Paremata-Plimmerton, although seven points back, having a game in hand.
It was great to see the clubrooms packed afterwards, especially when Randall Bishop came forward to be acknowledged as our latest member of the 200 Premier game club alongside Tawa legend Juinor Togia.
The Tawa haka, which has players from all our teams involved, was a truly memorable
occasion, and it's moments like these that make club footy special.
