Greetings all,

We are sad to inform members that Donna, the wife of one of our life members Nigel Carmichael, passed away earlier this week. Our condolences go out to Nigel and his whānau during this difficult time.

The ABs got the job done against a very gritty and determined French team that just wouldn’t go away. A lot of players new to the international game on display and it will be fascinating how many will be household names when the next World Cup rolls around in 2027.

It is interesting the way the international game is adjudicated vs super with the TMO having so much more input. I find it frustrating as it slows the game down, but I’m sure I’d have a different reaction if a test was decided on an obvious error that wasn’t ruled on.

Onto the main event where we had mixed results.

The Ducks continued on their merry way with a resounding 47-nil win against the OBU Sallywags, and now have a six point lead going into the BYE round.

At Redwood Park, the Colts played Upper Hutt in a top of the table clash with the winner crowned the first round champion. It was a tight encounter in the first half in what could only be said were shocking under-foot conditions. Tawa led 19-17 early in the second half, but Upper Hutt upped the ante and scored three quick tries to take the game away from Tawa to win 39-24. A disappointing end to the round, but I’m sure the boys will learn from the experience and be better players because of it.

Similarly at Pukehuia Park, the Premier 2s took on Upper Hutt in an elimination final. In a close encounter, Upper Hutt came out the winner 25-17. The result means the Premier 2s now move down to the HD Morgan competition.

Onto Lyndhurst Park, where the Premiers took on Paremata-Plimmerton in what was a replay of last week's final round robin game. Tawa played into the wind in the first half in what were surprisingly good under-foot conditions, especially considering the amount of rain we had had during the week.

Paremata-Plimmerton dominated the first half and went out to a 12-nil lead, which could have been bigger if two relatively kickable goals had gone over. Tawa only ventured into Paremata-Plimmerton’s 22 twice in the half and scored both times to take a surprising 14-12 lead into the break.

Paremata-Plimmerton scored early in the second half and then extended it to take a 26-14 lead into the last 15 mins. Tawa then finally held onto the ball and clicked into gear, scoring two late tries to win the match 28-26. The win means Tawa has a BYE before a mouth-watering semi-final at home against either Oriental-Rongotai or Johnsonville on 19th July.

You had to feel for Paremata-Plimmerton, who have lost their last two matches on the final whistle. In saying that, it is an 80 minute game and Tawa deserve credit for staying in the fight until the final whistle.

With the ABs in town next week, all club games will be kicking off at earlier time slots. The Premiers and Ducks have the week off but the Premier 2s, Colts, and Reserves are all playing, so let’s get out there and support our teams before the big match on Saturday night.
