Greetings all,

Our President is away for a couple of weeks so he asked me to be the scribe.

At the time of electing our new President due to Allan standing aside after an impressive tenure, I need to add, I mentioned we should return to the tradition of having a Vice President.

As with anything at committee level, if it's your idea, be prepared to do the job and that's how this came to be.

So with that said, after first teaming up with Stevo for the 1976 Tawa College 1st XV, two old boys have teamed up again for the mighty Tawa RFC's honoured positions of President and Vice President.

After College, Stevo and I continued to team up for the TRFC U19 team that played curtain raiser to the All Blacks v Lions test at Athletic Park in 1977, won by Tawa v Rongatai College.

We continued on playing for our Seniors and other teams to help out from 1979 to 1981, so we have a little bit of club history between us, and we're both still as committed to the club today as back then.

Onto pre-season training...

Coach Stevey S is pleased to report very good numbers - up to 60 for the last three weeks, with a lot of new young faces which is encouraging.

A reminder that our first preseason game has been moved from Lyndhurst Park due to WCC wisdom, and will be at Mana College v Norths on the 15th of March. Looking forward to that match up.

Super Rugby continues to entertain with 370 points scored across the five fixtures. The Hurricanes were lucky to get a W as Drua bombed a certain try.

A good result but not such a good game for our Captain courageous Kirifi who went from hero try scorer to zero yellow card holder after that tackle in the air.

So to finish the other game of note was the Landers v Blues. The tribute to Connor was heartfelt and emotional and just so fitting that they should get up and beat the Blues with some tries that even the great Ben Smith was on his feet cheering.

Upcoming events

This upcoming weekend, the annual Walk for Mental Health will be taking place on Sunday 2 March at 1.00pm, at Hikoikoi Reserve, Petone and William Jones Park, Wainuiomata. It is an initiative led by WRFU's Mental Health Committee and aims to promote community wellness, build awareness around mental health, foster a sense of unity among different rugby clubs, and raise funds for Youthline Wellington. Participants will come together in two locations for a 3km walk, completing 10 laps of a rugby field or up and down the Petone Esplanade. See you there!

Reminder that Rugby Smart coaching courses for new coaches are beginning soon. If you attended these in 2024, you do not need to attend.

The Wellington Pride Festival is coming up soon in March. Wellington Rugby will be marching in the Pride Parade on Saturday 8 March at 5.30pm, and is included in the Wellington Inclusive Sports group, led by Rainbow Wellington. Come along to the Parade and show your support for LGBTQIA+ rugby players and whānau!

And remember to mark your calendars: Old Timers Day is Tawa v Poneke for the Carmichael Cup on Saturday, 19 April.
