On the upside, we continue to bring young men
into our club each year which in turn gives us strength in numbers, family values, and more depth. This year we had four teams in men’s senior competition, with all four gaining a place in their respective WRFU finals. I have no stats to back this up, but I would suggest no other club in Wellington has had that sort of result. Our U85s won and the Premiers, Premier 2s, and Colts made us proud. The Jubilee Cup game was won by OBU, who were unable to relax as our boys spent the last 10 minutes
camped right on the line. A lot of people I spoke to after the game, who were not Tawa supporters, suggested it was one of the most exciting finals ever!
Although I shall give up this post, I am still the Chairperson of the WRFU Wellbeing sub-committee. A couple of years ago, I presented a paper to WRFU on wellbeing with the intro
“Are you a Community Rugby Club, or a Rugby Club in the Community?” This in turn led to an idea I took to WRFU five years ago, that of a “Walk for Wellbeing”. Getting traction was a huge undertaking with nowhere near the response we (I) had hoped for. I was very pleased to have Youthline (where my younger daughter used to volunteer) onboard as our charity of choice. For those who did turn out, we received great accolades for giving it a
go. So much so, that WRFU with Rotary and Youthline will be arranging another “Walk for Wellbeing” at 1300hrs, March 2nd 2025, with three venues being: Ngati Toa Domain, Plimmerton; William Jones Park, Wainuiomata; and Petone Foreshore.
In closing, it would be very remiss of me to not write a paragraph on our club and how far we have come over the last few years. I have wondered
why each season, we do not seem to get many, if any reps from the Tawa club, even though we play above our weight and composition at any time. Sure, we have injuries, but then so does every club, but we still continue to battle above our weight, so to speak. Finally, over the last two seasons, we have at last had a major break-through with a number of our players in the super rugby competition, along with a number playing in the Wellington Lions, culminating in being the winners of the national
championship. This augers well for our future as a very competitive club where players can see a future – at long last.
In addition to the above, I have great pleasure in advising that at our AGM, we nominated a President for 2025 and a Vice President for 2025.
