Hi ,
Last Saturday was a long one. My Rugby started at the Cambridge
Hotel for the Alumni Luncheon for ex Wellington Lions Players. Bit of a live "who's who" of Wellington Lions from the past - including our own Tolu (who is looking trim enough to be a first-five). Keith Quinn announced the recipients of this years group of Players receiving their recognition. This is a well presented framed certificate to be given to all ex Players over the next while. Great concept.
From there to the Stadium. We had some rather excited Waikato Supporters on the Bus who were very sure they were only in Wellington for one purpose. Seemed to be a hell of a crowd in the Corporate Boxes, but not as much as I expected in the stands. At this point, I must thank a couple of our loyal Tawa Supporters, Gerry & Bernie for helping me out. I guess you can always rely on Tawa Old Boys to be there in time of need.
Personally, I thought the Lions should take it, but probably by 1-12 points. The first quarter was fairly even, but then at the 33 minute line Pepesana (Tawa) scored. Half time 10-6. Half time in the Lounge was pretty tense as we all waited to see what the Mooloos would bring back to the table. As it turned out, very little. Quite frankly, the Mooloos seemed overawed and did not appear to fire a shot in the second half. A well won Game to put the Log O Wood away for the
Summer.
In the meantime our Black Ferns were chewing out Japan by 95-12. Wanganui also had a good win over Buller 83-7. Wanganui play Horowhenua Kapiti this Saturday in Levin.
Saturday night saw the Wallabies come to
Eden Park, where they had not won since 1986. I have no idea where that Game came from, but the AB's played as a Team that we have all been waiting for. There are a huge number of Players who stepped up and it can only come from the two new Assistant Coaches. Except for Ardie who is always inspirational! A good Mate said (and I quote) "is it just coincidence that Cane was not on the field?" A bit hard to argue, I would think.
